I encourage you to carve out more time to pursue your side hustles. Often, we have the time but fill it with inconsequential things instead of what truly matters. Pursuing our God-led passions not only brings fulfillment but also allows us to help others in the process. Today, I’m going to share 10 strategies I personally used to make time for my passions while working.
Working moms can find ways to work on their side passions with intentional strategies to balance time, energy, and resources.
Top Ways Working Moms Can Prioritize Their Side Hustles
- Be Faithful with the Little: Start by committing to being faithful with what you have. This is more about mindset, but it sets the stage for tangible tasks. If you’re faithful with little, you’ll be faithful with much. That’s scriptural—Luke 16:10. If we’re faithful with what’s in our hand, God will bless us with more. Start with small, manageable goals. Realize that small progress is still progress. Even working on your passion for 10-20 minutes a day can accumulate over time.
- Outline Your Goals: Write out your quarterly, monthly, and weekly goals in a journal. Start with the major goal you want to accomplish for the quarter, then break it down into monthly goals that will help you achieve that larger goal. For example, if your main goal for the quarter is to acquire one paid coaching client, Month 1 might focus on building your offer, so your tasks could include outlining your coaching program, creating marketing materials on a platform like Canva, and finding groups to network in. Month 2 might focus on outlining your social media strategy and finding a long-form platform to promote your services. Then, set weekly goals that further break down these larger objectives.
- Use a Planner: From personal experience, a planner is essential. This is where you’ll jot down the goals you’ve set previously. You can still use your digital tools, but a physical planner helps you stay focused and organized with your goals. Writing down specific tasks for each day, week, or month helps you stay committed and feel accomplished as you cross off completed tasks.
- Optimize Your Lunch Breaks: When I was working, I would use this time to interview guests for my blog or fit in a quick workout. If you work from home, ensure you’re taking your lunch breaks and using them effectively.
- Batch Work: Group similar tasks together to maximize efficiency. For example, dedicate specific times for content creation, research, and client management.
- Optimize Your Commutes: Use your commutes wisely. Whether it’s listening to a podcast, an audiobook, or an educational course, use this time to enhance your knowledge and skills.
- Leverage Company Resources: Take advantage of any educational opportunities your company offers. For example, I utilized my company’s support to obtain a master’s degree, which not only enhanced my skills but also benefited my future endeavors.
- Blend Work with Your Passion: If your passion overlaps with your job, try to integrate it into your role. This might include writing for your company’s blog or newsletter or perhaps assisting with your company’s social media.
- Include Your Kids in Your Passions: My kids grew up with me blogging, which allowed us to experience many exciting opportunities together like movie premieres and frequent visits to theme parks. Involving your kids in your passions not only allows for quality time together but also sets a powerful example.
- Join a Network of Like-Minded Professionals: Being part of a community of like-minded individuals can provide motivation, accountability, and practical advice. Start by joining or creating a group tailored to your niche.
