Sawyer, who actually began her career as a Kentucky beauty queen, is stepmother to two daughters and a son from her husband, Mike Nichols.
The news anchor is also a history-maker. In her earlier days she assisted President Richard Nixon with his press releases and prepared him for some of his famous interviews. She even helped him write his published memoirs.
In 1984, she became the first female correspondent on 60 Minutes, a CBS News investigative-television newsmagazine. During Sawyer’s five years with 60 Minutes, the program regularly ranked among the top-five most-watched in the country
Currently, she’s anchor on ABC’s World News, but announced recently that she would step down from the anchor chair and begin a new program at ABC News.
