NHL and Olympic “Hero”, T.J. Oshie, 27, and his fiancee, Lauren Cosgrove, welcomed their daughter, Lyla Grace, on March 17th, but not without complications. The 3-week-old had gastroschisis, a birth defect in which an infant is born with the intestines on the outside of the body.

This condition affects about 1,871 babies born in the US each year, according to the CDC, and even after repair infants with this disorder can have problems with feeding, digestion of food and absorption of nutrients. The new parents couldn’t even hold their little girl for several days because she had to have emergency surgery immediately after her birth.
Although welcoming their baby into the world was a joyous celebration, Oshie revealed recently on NBC’s, Today Show that there’s been a fair amount of stress for them. The surgeon said that Lyla’s intestines are working fine, and the couple are hoping to bring their daughter home this week.
Oshie scored the game-winning goal for Team USA, against Russia, at the Winter Olympics, and became an instant American hero. Our prayers go out to the couple and baby Lyla, as she continues to recover.
