If you’ve ever wondered whether your passion is something you can truly pursue, the best way to find out is to test it in small, practical ways. You don’t need to start big. Begin by sharing it, offering it, and putting it into practice where you are. Here are five ways to test out your passion right now.
How to Test Your Passion
1. Share What You Do with Others
Simply talking about your passion can open doors. When someone tells me they have a passion they’re not pursuing, I encourage them to start small. Sharing your passion with those you trust allows them to cheer you on, and someone in your circle may even need the service or product you provide. Don’t hold back—what you love doing could meet a real need.
2. Create a Simple Online Post
If your passion is cooking or baking, share a simple recipe online and see the response. A single post, reel, or story can highlight your skills and connect you with people who may benefit from what you do. Putting your work out there in a small way can give you quick feedback on what resonates.

3. Offer to Help a Friend
Testing your passion in real life is one of the best ways to see how it impacts others. Over the years, I’ve coached friends and family for free to help them uncover how to monetize their passions. You can do the same with your own interests.
Examples:
-
If you love cooking or baking, make something special for a friend and ask for feedback.
-
If you enjoy organizing, offer to declutter a friend’s space and see how much it helps them.
4. Find a Place to Volunteer
Volunteering is another way to put your passion into action. I’ve volunteered for years in church and community settings. Recently, I volunteered at a women’s organization and taught a group how to build their online brand over several sessions.
Here are some ways you can volunteer your passion:
-
Teach kids a skill at a local church or community center
-
Cook or bake for shelters or nonprofit events
-
Organize donation drives or community spaces
-
Help at food banks, libraries, or women’s shelters
-
Offer workshops at mom groups or youth programs
5. Start Pursuing Your Passion on a Small Scale
Once you’ve tested your passion informally, start pursuing it on a manageable level. When I earned my master’s in professional writing over 15 years ago, I began by freelance writing. Later, I joined an online content platform where I published articles on topics like cooking, baking, career tips, parenting, and celebrity moms. The celebrity mom stories resonated the most, which eventually led me to start my blog, Tinseltown Mom.
For you, the smaller scale might look like preparing meals for friends, providing baked goods for school or church, or offering your services within your local community.
Testing your passion doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Start by sharing it, offering it to someone you know, or volunteering your skills in your community. These simple steps will help you see how your passion resonates with others and give you clarity on whether to pursue it further.
